Dame Helen Mirren is a star in every way, yet even she fell foul of the rules about older people this year. And it wasn’t for wearing a red bikini, nor for wearing a tux on the red carpet. It was for a bag.
Not quite, Lady Bracknell, it was a backpack. But either way, it was a nuts argument, with countless women’s magazines asking how old was “too old” for a backpack?
Bags are an essential part of any woman’s wardrobe so obviously they, too, must be subjected to “The Rules,” with experts telling us what handbags we should we in our 20s, 30s, 40s and so on.
As ever, 50Sense isn’t buying. Well, she is buying, because I need a new handbag desperately (ignoring the many I’ve got in my wardrobe, obviously), but I’m not buying that there are age limits on what I can get.
Handbags are a love of mine and always have been. I want a classic Lulu Guinness red lips clutch purely so I can frame it and hang it on my wall.
Together with shoes, a beautiful bag is like a piece of art, giving the wearer a voice and showing off their personality.
At the moment, I’m in love with the fun bags at Glitz N’ Pieces, which is a real “girl power” brand. It’s an online retailer that was started by Dubliners Ellen Weber and Grace O’Sullivan a few years ago, when they were still at university. Their catchline is: “We believe that every woman has the right to treat herself to beautiful things.”
I love that their target audience is 25-50 – but as I said, there are no age limits on bags! Imagine going to collect your pension with one of these bad boys!
Because I wear dark colours so much, I like my bags to have a bit of oomph about them so they stand out. A coloured handbag will add life and spice to your ensemble, but even a row of studs can make a difference (I can’t help it, I always wanted to be a rock chick). And a detachable handle allows you to try a totally different vibe – crossbody, over the shoulder or as a sophisticated clutch.
Mr 50Sense is getting a list of bags for Santa to choose from. These are on them (click for direct link):
